Hiking coupleIt is no secret that as we grow older we tend to get more set in our ways, and stick to what is comfortable or what has always worked; after all if it’s not broke, don’t fix it right?

Unfortunately, this is not always the cases, especially when it comes to shoes and our feet. In ALL cases a shoe WILL wear out, most often before they are considered to be worn out, and since it happens so gradually it can be difficult to recognize when it is time to replace that “favorite pair."

As a result, shoes often become a backburner concern in later years, but their importance to proper senior foot care can’t be underestimated. As we age, our feet can also change in many ways including SIZE, we tend to lose the cushioning layer of fat along the bottoms of our feet, and we can be more susceptible to poor circulation and arthritis. Often these changes slowly over many years so they are often unnoticed, at least until there is an issue or concern.

The right shoes for seniors not only provide comfort during movement, they can also help maintain balance and avoid falls that come from foot pain or changes in gait. That’s why it’s important to keep up with the sizes and needs of your feet.

Have your shoe size checked by a store professional, even if you believe you know what it is. Things can and do change over time. It’s also important to have your gait examined so a pair of shoes can provide the right types of balance and support for the specific ways your feet move. The professionals at our own store, The Right Shoe, are specially trained to consider both these factors when helping you find your perfect fit.

In general, you will likely want shoes with plenty of cushioning, a thick sole, arch support, and an overall light frame. Additional features such as Velcro straps can make donning and removing shoes easier. Most importantly, always be sure to try on BOTH shoes. The shoes must feel good when you put them on, and be accommodating to you. If they don’t feel like they fit, or you don’t feel comfortable in them, DON’T BUY THEM.
