Nerves in feetThe importance of the nervous system cannot be overstated. Not only does it enable us to react to situations in order to stay alive, it also contributes to how we experience the world around us. Imagine, for a second, not being able to appreciate the sounds in your favorite song, the sight of a masterful painting, or the taste of your mom’s best dish.

Sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch all have their respective places in the human experience, but they do contribute immensely to our safety and wellbeing. When you experience a painful sensation, it allows you to know an issue is present. If you have numbness or tingling in your feet, there is an issue which needs to be addressed. They can be indicative of a nerve issue, like:

  • Neuropathy – Otherwise simply known as nerve damage, neuropathy can lead to tingling, burning, and painful sensations. These can be quite severe in some cases, but numbness is another concern, especially for individuals who have diabetes.
  • Neuromas – A neuroma is a nerve tissue which has become enlarged or thickened, often as the result of pressure on the nerve.
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome – Tingling tends to an issue with tarsal tunnel syndrome on account of nerve entrapment. This is experienced in the back of the foot.

Metatarsalgia isn’t necessarily a nerve issue, but numbness or tingling in feet can be symptoms of the condition. There are several causes of metatarsalgia, including intense physical training, foot deformity or inherited structure (high arches, abnormally-long second toes), excess weight, and ill-fitting footwear.
