Problems with implanted hardware (screws/plates) are a rare but known post operative complication. Ignoring irritation related to hardware can lead to increasing pain, poor healing or breakage of the hardware. Bone is a living tissue with some flexibility, unlike implanted metal which is more rigid. Screws and other metal implants support and immobilize bones internal in much the same was as a cast would from the outside. We wish Mr. Durant luck with his post operative course.
